What is a WAN?

What is a WAN?

WAN stands for Wide Area Network. It refers to a type of computer network that connects multiple sites or devices over large geographic distances—such as across cities, states, or countries. WANs are essential for organizations that operate from more than one location and need to share data, systems, and resources securely and efficiently.

Unlike a LAN (Local Area Network), which is confined to a single building or location, a WAN links multiple LANs together through public or private infrastructure like fiber circuits, broadband internet, LTE/5G cellular, or satellite. It enables remote offices, cloud access, and mobile users to connect to centralized services and each other.

Key Features of a WAN

  • Geographically Distributed: Connects networks across long distances
  • Public and Private Transport: Uses internet, MPLS, fiber, or cellular networks
  • Secure Communication: Often protected by encryption and firewalls
  • Centralized Access: Enables IT teams to manage remote locations from a central site

Common WAN Technologies

  • SD-WAN: Software-defined WAN for smart routing and bandwidth optimization
  • VPN: Encrypted tunnels that connect users and branch offices securely
  • MPLS: Private circuits used in many legacy enterprise WANs
  • Hybrid WAN: Combines broadband, fiber, LTE/5G, and satellite for flexibility and failover

At IronWAN, we design and build secure WAN infrastructure that connects people, sites, and systems reliably across any distance—empowering modern businesses, agencies, and institutions to stay online, secure, and in sync.
